See things in your mind and wonder about things that have not yet come to pass.
Imagination can be used to learn and as I stated before is the key to all innovation. This ability usually manifests itself as daydreaming, but it can appear in a variety of forms. To the outside observer, daydreaming may seem impractical, yet with a closer examination, the rewards of daydreaming are beneficial to our long-term health. Daydreaming can relieve the mind from stress, bring a feeling of calmness, and provide temporary happiness from unpleasant circumstances..
The man who has no imagination has no wings. ~Muhammad Ali
The ability to see things in your mind and wonder influences everything we do, think about and create. It leads to elaborate theories, dreams and inventions and influences everything we do. It literally pervades our entire existence.
In leadership roles we need imagination the most. It is not shameful or childish to master this ability. Imagination is vital to developing leadership competency. In my mastermind groups we discuss the benefits of developing an ‘imagination muscle’. The more you use your imagination, the stronger it will become. This ability, when mastered, allows you to tap into an infinite source of ideas and possibilities. Mastering imagination, creates a distinct advantage, not only with leading people into the future but also allowing you to foresee the challenges not yet come to pass.
Successful people use imagination to shape the world by harnessing it’s power to work in their favor. Both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs used their imagination, envisaging how personal computers could change the world. They did this by envisioning the way we work, how we use education, and how we entertain ourselves. The world has benefited immensely from their imaginative minds.
To begin using your imagination to shape the world around you, first know your goal and have a vision of what you want to achieve. By having a clear vision of what the end result looks like you will be able to direct your imagination to see the path to achieving your vision.
To achieve your vision you must begin at the end. It might sound rather odd to begin with the end in mind, but this is the secret to obtaining a clear vision of what you would like to achieve. If you focus on the obstacles that get in the way instead, you will quickly find yourself overwhelmed and distracted. By having a strong, clear vision and most importantly, knowing why your vision is so important to you, your imagination will be able to add the missing ingredients to get where you want to be.
What most never realize is that our imagination shapes our truth and we can each control our imagination as easily as we can think. If we can imagine failure or falling short, we can just as easily imagine success and achievement. This means we can literally “steer” ourselves towards our goal or target. However, it won’t happen overnight.
